Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a DIY Flower Wedding Centerpiece

Whether you’re crafting for your own celebration, a loved one’s big day, or selling your services, these easy-to-make designs should give you all the inspiration you need.

Create your own DIY flower centerpieces for tables to wow guests and elevate the occasion.

1. Create a color palette

First, you’ll want to identify your color palette before you gather any materials.

This color palette should have some type of “color harmony,” whether that be monochromatic, complementary, triadic, or analogous.

Begin with a base color as your inspiration, then work outwards to create your color harmony. These colors should be within the greater wedding color scheme for a well-balanced appeal.

2. Gather materials

Next up, you’ll want to gather all of your flower design materials.

Some things you’ll need include:

  • A base such as:
    • Vase
    • Terracotta pot
    • China pitcher
    • Teacup
  • Base filler like:
    • Florist foam
    • Faux moss
    • Acrylic water
  • Various faux florals
    • Focal flowers
    • Filler flowers
  • Variety of greenery
  • Hot glue
  • Florist wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Extras and accessories

3. Prep your base

Now, it’s time to prep your base.

If you’ve chosen a glass vase, I suggest filling it with acrylic water for a realistic look.

For opaque containers, cut a piece of florist foam to fit the container, then fit it snugly inside – no glue required! Next, lay a bit of faux moss on top to hide the foam.

This step will vary based on the design you make.

4. Make a greenery foundation

I always like to start with greenery before adding my flowers. This gives a solid starting point for my arrangement.

Add greenery to your design, preferably in varying textures for visual appeal.

Remember to think seasonally and thematically about your choices. For example, palm leaves for summer and holly for winter.

5. Add focal flowers

Next up, add your focal flowers to the design. These are going to be the big “wow factor” of the arrangement.

Focal flowers are larger and usually in the same shade as your inspiration color.

6. Piece together and play

Now, it’s time to play with texture and dimension.

Add more contrasting greenery, delicate filler flowers, whimsical grass, or anything else to give your design a bit more character.

7. Consider place settings

As you’re setting the table for your DIY flower wedding centerpiece, ensure all aspects of the table settings are harmonious.

Your color palette should include placemats, table runners, tablecloths, and more.

8. Add special touches

Finally, think about any additional touches you can add to tie your arrangement together.

Surround your design with twinkle lights, pair it with elegant candlesticks, wrap a rustic jute bow around the base – anything that fits the overall aesthetic.
